From Fashion to Farming – Roger Saul shares his thoughts on great customer service

It’s all about values really – at Sharpham Park I work just as hard to sell a £5.95 bag of Granola as I did to sell a £595.00 handbag at Mulberry.

My personal values haven’t changed in 35 years of trading – and these values will always be my drivers in any business venture I am involved in. How do you describe the values of our brand….? When my wife Monty asks employees this on training sessions, they are quite regularly stumped for answers. They struggle because true values are abstract, atmospheric feelings and completely overlooked in their salespower.

Us Brits are not usually too good at talking feelings – particularly when you are trying to get staff to demonstrate  values such as pride, quality and enthusiasm to the customer they are serving on a day to day basis. It’s not rocket science – just treat the customer like someone who you love (yuk! – how American does that sound?) But it’s true – when we ask our staff to imagine they are serving their favourite Granny…then you see the change in smile, tone of voice, effort to find the right product…etc…etc…

Join the consumer forum and give us your pet rant and best customer ‘WOW’ moment….and we’ll share some of our quality customer moments from the last 35 years of doing business with you– and believe me, we do have some corkers spanning our years in the hotel, fashion and food industries.

Want to hear about the Hamster in the Handbag or the Corpse in the Bath…then watch this blog-space…..

Bye for now

Roger Saul.
